A unique end-of-the-world setting in 80s East Bloc Romania as the world literally disappears out from underneath the feet (and wheels) of citizens, and a black void begins to claim survivors stranded on islands floating in the abyss. And there’s some provocative and appealing philosophical debates about gender and class roles mixed in.
I was really curious to see how such a peculiar physical premise could play out in this kind of a story (I’m always doing the “but what about… this and that and how would that work” questioning of plot. So, I was pleasantly surprised that the author addressed my own questions and doubts in a way that made sense to the plot but also addressed those metaphysical questions in my own head.
“…𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒇𝒖𝒍.”
As the main characters, Rosi, Sorin and Gigi are spurred on in their logging truck by phantom radio signals, they navigate this eerie and terrifying new world (or, non-world) encountering survivors, unseen entities trying to drag them into the void, and creatures that look like humans infiltrating their space.

Overall, I really enjoyed the plot and the characters’ development was strong and engaging. I look forward to a (hopeful?) sequel to this and exploring this author’s other works!

Fantastic, as always. I’ve read the original version from Page’s excellent collection Orphans of the Atercosm: A Collection but was excited to see him re-release this just prior to the forthcoming The Swallowed Town (which I’ve also been lucky to read an early version of) as a kind of lead-in/taster/related story.
This short novella feels at times like you’re reading a classic lyrical ballad or epic – literary horror for the cerebral crowd. It’s ostensibly a very noir detective noir, replete with cosmic rituals and abyssal entities couched in erudite prose. All masterfully done in a spare 90-something pages.
I read it. And then I immediately read it again.
“…I have neither the brain nor the words nor the eyesight…”
Oh, but Page has those words… unequivocally, unmistakably, abyssally, and in abundance…

A fun ride through this park! A brand new high concept amusement park goes off the rails and mayhem ensues. The book's concept was really well envisioned and executed (ha!), the set pieces were familiar, yet fresh. A lot of these ‘attractions' sort of tickle the nostalgia part of the brain, like you're sure you've heard an old childhood urban legend/campfire story about some of them long ago...
This novel definitely skews on the lighter/younger side for Ralston, which was somewhat surprising. So it's perfectly ok for you to let your teenager read it (of course, that then introduces them to Ralston's other stuff which you may find a bit more difficult explaining.)
The plot got kind of chaotic towards the end, but the momentum stayed strong. There's also lots of pseudo-science-invention stuff happening that can be jarring, but c'mon you're reading a book about a ghost-filled amusement park, so suspension of disbelief is already fully activated.
Overall a fun novel.
Oh, and the website... GhostlandPark is hysterical. Talk about commitment to a project!
