Is there a dead body under your sceptic tank?
The 5th book in the Merrily Watkins series and without doubt the darkest so far. There's a hell of lot going on here... Serial Killers, sightings of angels, alien abduction, folk music, electro-hypersensitivity, black magic, tractor envy, but it's the introduction of Fred & Rose west that cast the biggest shadow over the story. Lots of threads, lots and lots of threads and lots and lots of characters with everything neatly tied up with a Scooby Dooish ending.
I think these books are amazing and hugely satisfying, it's like being wrapped in your favourite mufflements with an endless supply of tea and posh biscuits. Slow paced yes, but sometimes that's a good thing.
This is one of the books I read while doing the horrible commute on the rickety metro system between Newcastle & Sunderland. Probably not really concentrating, often falling asleep, sat next to a dribbling man or an insane whistler. To be honest I couldn't really remember much about it, hence the 2nd read.
All I can say is, WTF!! WTAF!! First half is peak Nevill, the horror is real, loneliness, desperation, feelings of failure, a life on the verge of a breakdown held together with a little bit of hope and a sympathetic boss called Leonard. Then we take a sharp turn into insanity. We've got dolls, stuffed animals, lots of rats, medieval music, vintage torture porn and poor lighting. Not going to lie, it's not an easy read, in fact it's quite an uncomfortable read. The ending does tie everything up quite nicely but getting there sure is trippy and maybe the trippiness overshadows some of the reveals at the end.
1st re-read of the year.
I remember being really excited when this book first came out (10 years ago), and then remember being a little bit underwhelmed, I wanted the same magic as The Terror & Drood but this felt bogged down with way too much detail
I kind of stand by my original 3 stars, I think this time I was able to lose myself in the book a little more, but a large part of the first 300 pages feels like a real chore, a mountaineering equipment sermon if you like. Part 2 & 3 are much better the action moves on swiftly and there are some brilliantly written perilous moments on mount Everest, in fact it all feels a little bit Alistair Maclean. Part 3 is called The Abominable. What could it possibly mean? Well I tell you this... It is definitely NOT what you think.
