This is one of my favorite reads of 2020 for the concepts it explores and the characters who explore them. But there are other reasons the book resonates with me. One of my favorite movies from the late 1990s was a flick called The Thirteenth Floor. It was a movie about similar subject matter... itself based on a book published in 1964. While the film holds up fairly well these days, I've never been willing to read the book. How could something from the 60s stand up as engaging techno-fiction?
Excitingly, NPC explores a similar space while breaking new and exiting ground on the concept that “reality is a simulation” by introducing modern gaming concepts and cutting edge technology in addition to compelling, likable (and despicable) characters.
And since it's a Robinson thriller, there are enough twists to keep readers sorting things out and fully transfixed until the final page.
For added fun, check out the audiobook. The way the narrators tag-team the reading is fantastic. They bring this book to life in the best possible way.
It never fails. Harry finds trouble or trouble finds Harry. This time it seems to be both. I just didn't expect the book to end with things so unresolved. I guess we wait for the rest of the story later this year. I'm at the edge of my seat. I'll call this part one and say that I'm dying to see what happens next.
When I finished the first book in this series, I admit to feeling this series was a novelty. I'm not a sports nut but I found the storytelling perspective interesting and at least as creative as the Scifi world in which it was based. But with the second book finished and the characters more fleshed out and developed (thanks to more time on the page), I find myself plunging headlong into the next book. Sigler's work on the audiobook was a little distracting at first. Now I find it compelling, enriching, and engaging. All of the voices and effects are lending to the experience in a way that's reminiscent of the audio dramas of the pre-television radio age.
It was interesting to finally go back and see how the characters met, particularly have so many books in the series. After so many allusions to their past, it was great to go back and fill in the history. Not only that, but the backstory was also impressively full and satisfying. That's no small accomplishment given the longevity of the series and that multiple authors have worked on it.
This has been on my to-read list for far too long. It's a fantastic book with gripping action and a compelling protagonist. I couldn't stop listening!

The plot was overly complex, but the book was a crossover in the Baldacci universe as it included characters from another of his series. And not just a limited cameo appearance. The crossover characters played a big part and had more than just passing participation. That made the story vastly more compelling and fun for longtime fans.
