My new favorite book. I've learned something important about myself and other people from reading it and various reviews. When someone says “Maia, yuck! He's just too nice. I hate him.” That person – don't trust them one inch. Maia is the person I want to be. Addison does an amazing job of revealing the personal struggles of a real person who intends to be good and do the right thing. It is not an easy attempt, not dull and static, but a fluid and difficult grind.
I listened to the audiobook read by Kyle McCarley, and I will never know if I love the book more for the writing or for his perfect voice. I do not normally listen to books, but I am so glad I did this time.
I read this and ... whatever it is that comes next. I almost enjoyed them. Unfortunately, there were two problems. One, the curious incident of the full moon rising at midnight. I actually stopped reading at that point. But worse, far far far worse, is the brutality-porn chapter in each. Goodkind just enjoyed that horror too much, and I didn't. I almost enjoyed them, but instead they wound up being on my “worst books I've ever read” list, and that is a very short list.
I know there are those who say I should not like this book because of the author's backward views of some matters, but it is one of the best books I have ever read. I love it.
I can actually draw now–a little bit–thanks to this book. I know I would be able to draw much better if I gave it some time and effort. I would have thought such a thing impossible before I opened this book. The author taught me how to stop and look at what is really there in front of me, not simply to rely on my ingrained symbolic representations of things.
