I really enjoyed this! I can't speak to the parallels between this and Carrie, since I only know that from cultural existence, but the book works well on its own. The podcast transcript and other ephemera are well done and the ending leaves a lot of mystery, which I always enjoy.
Finally, I will say that I found Maddy's home life with her father really difficult to read so I imagine if you have any issues surrounding parental abuse/violence, just have a heads up.
Gorgeous and sad and infuriating. I love Beatons work so much and it was great to see some of her more serious stuff. I got so choked up about Becky even tho she isn't a part of the hook. There was something about a particular time on twitter that it really felt like you knew her. It was like seeing an old friend.
A spooky, thrilling page-turner! Adams does a great job with the setting, giving it a real sense of place and the plight of Black lives in Appalachia - there are “good” Black people or a “bad” Black people and those labels mean different things to different people.
I think this would work well in concert with Megan Giddings' Lakewood.
Perfection! I have such a love for Hava - a hurt girl who is trying to figure out not to hide - and this was just wonderful to follow her. I loved all the babies - Moth especially.
Cashore writes emotions so well and this gave me a ton of them. Plus adding in pacifism and restorative justice? The best!!
I liked but didn't love this interpretation of The Thin Man in space. I think that my main issues with it is that you don't feel much real danger or tension for Shal and Tesla because, as happens in the book many many times, Tesla is able to get out of sticky situations by being rich. That's fine but it made everything a little less interesting after the second, third, fourth time.
I did love her lawyer, Gimlet, and the cocktail recipes, though!
I read Graceling in 2015 and really liked it but didn't love it. After seeing Kristin Cashore and Elizabeth Lim give fascinating talks about fantasy at the Boston Book Festival, Renata suggested I pick back up with the series with Winterkeep.
Correctly, she thought I would love it. AND I DID. I love character-driven stories and fantasy and political intrigue so this was right up my alley. Plus, blue telepathic foxes! I love them. I would love to have a telepathic fox companion - I promise not to reveal the secrets of foxkind!!
Anyway, this book is great, I'm looking forward to Seasparrow, and always listen to Renata!
