Props to Renata for being like, “This book is extremely for you and you will love it!” As usual, she was correct!
This is a gorgeous book. The way Higuera works in Lita's stories and Petra's memories is genius. The message is important - differences are good, beautiful, and necessary! - but not done in a preachy or age-inappropriate way. It's also just a great story that I think kid readers will like? Sometimes books are beautiful and important and yet I wonder if they will become widely read. This is dystopian without despair and science fiction with spaceships but not in an alienating way.
Well done to the Newbery Committee for choosing such a wonderful winner!
A perfect ending to a great series. I will definitely miss my friends but SUCH a good ending.
2025 Re-read thoughts: reading about the crumbling of empires during an actual crumbling of an empire is weird. I thought it would make me more depressed but it’s reminded me of hope. Of a hope that we can still make the right choice to avoid getting turned into the Borg/Human Instrumentality Project if we just try a little compassion and trust.
This is just the perfect ending for this series and I want to talk about more about it everyone: Tanaka’s violent Ahab routine hunting the leviathan, Amos at the end of the world, the persistence of humanity through all the horrors.
“I absolutely believe that people are more good on balance than bad. […] maybe it’s only a little more good than bad in us, but…..” - James Fucking Holden.
I think a lot of tweens will like this book but it's not necessarily for me. I liked the world building but the writing was a bit too cloying for me? Also, I couldn't quite figure out the audience: some of the characters would fit in well in established middle grade but Scarlett is pretty violet and in one scene there's bit about people being skinned and their skins turned into flags hanging outside a city. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age but that seems like a lot for children's/middle grade.
But if you like adventure stories with competent bank robbers and silly language, this is for you!
I enjoyed this but didn't love it! I'm not sure what didn't click for me - the art was good (though I found some of the backgrounds a little lacking but that's probably just a translation from webcomic) and the story cute. Something about it just didn't grab me in a new enough way for this old story.
I can see how people really love it and I'm happy for them!
