Subtle, patient, sometimes difficult, and unflinchingly dark. Just when (as the book describes it) the “hubris of youth” becomes a little much, the claustrophobia of proximity to a completely unlikable protagonist gives way to another, more mature, creeping dread that knocked me down completely. Honestly, this book is kind of unmissable.
