I have read a few classics now and they all seem to be hit or miss for me. Writing styles from the time period 100+yrs ago often feel dry and boring even if the overall story and plot are entertaining reads.
Oliver Twist is one of those that has a good story and at times good writing but the style can still be a bit dry reading at times. However there are also moment of humor.
Going in I knew that Oliver Twist was a orphan boy and had the view that he was a petty thieft and troublesome kid who got himself into trouble via his own choices, but after reading the the book my perspective has changed. While he did find himself in trouble its not that he was a problem child but that trouble found him. Oliver is a kind hearted kid who does not want to be a part of the life he has foundhimself caught up. He is desperate for a loving home and does not want to be invovled in the dark side of victorian englands criminal element
Overall a good enjoyable read, would have rated it higher but the hit and miss writing style were the drawbacks. Ie one character regulary referred to as "the jew" while I get part of the culture of the time did not really like that as a way to describe him, especially considering "the jew" is one of the villians. as well as many of the characters did not have alot of development and thus were characters I did not care much for.
Overall however a good read if not great or perfect
