Ignatius J. Reilly ist ein pseudo-intelektueller fetter Riese ohne die geringsten Manieren. Er lebt in New Orleans zusammen mit seiner Mutter, die ihn schliesslich zwingt einen Job anzunehmen. Zuerst landet er bei Levy Pants und zettelt eine Revolte an. Danach versucht er sein Glück als Hot-Dog Verkäufer, wird allerdings selbst sein bester Kunde. Am Ende zwingen die Konsequenzen dieser Erlebnisse ihn dazu zusammen mit seiner College-Romanze Myrna - einer sex-besessenen Radikalen - aus New Orleans zu fliehen.

Reread/listen of the classic, and Austen is still the master of witty examinations of the human mind inside a Victorian love story. This one shines in the small moments - the hidden glances, the blushes - yet lacks in plot and development of side characters.

I might be graving more of a narrative thread in my non-fiction books lately. This is starting to feel too much like a compendium of all the usual logic examples, and I don't have the patience to power through it to get to the potentially interesting conclusions at the end. So I'll DNF.

couldn't connect to the characters and then got slightly bored

Started listening to this, and also quite liked the narration, but was then put off by the large jumps in time between the individual stories. Probably in the mood for something more linear, so I'll stop this now.

Wells is a smooth writer, but this reads too much like a YA book for me and I'll stop now at ~25%. The novel resembles so many coming-of-age stories - an outsider, going through troubles at home, finds a clique of (oh so diverse) new friends, learns life lessons, falls in love - that I immediately felt bored.

Why does a German author choose Missouri as the site for his teenager story, when the location seems completely irrelevant to the plot? The book even has an English title. Smells like someone wants to conquer the American market.

Will stop at 12%. I guess neurotic young women are not as fun if there are no mermen involved.

Listened to about half an hour, but decided to stop. Too free form, like a stream of thoughts, but in a too fragmented way, that makes it hard to take in as audio.

Une vingtaine de pages dans le livre, je vais l'abandonner, parce qu'il me manque un intrigue captivante et j'ai besoin de cela pour ma lecture francaise. De plus, il me manque cette connaissance specifique de l'histoire et de la culture francaises qui semble rendre cela plus gratifiant.

Stopping this despite having reached 50%. The novel is split into two parts, and I quite enjoyed the first shorter part. But now the second part is too meandering, and has a navel gazing aspect that becomes worse because the protagonist of the novel is an author. So, the two stars are for the first section, which apparently existed as a standalone novella before.

Got 22% into this, but I am too overwhelmed with the level of detail on Russian oligarchs, KGB agents, and all the economic and corrupt deals between them. I think I'll have to find myself a big-picture portrait first.

Only got 15 pages into this, but every third sentence reads like a young person's emo poem.

Even though I made it nearly 2/5 into this big book and rather enjoy Shuggie, I will still stop here, as it broadly just has too much misery and too many unlikeable characters. It's a mood thing, not a quality thing.

I made it to 43% but will drop this now nevertheless. There's lots of interesting stuff in here, the traditions and beliefs of the Akha minority, the tea business in China, but the plot feels soapy and melodramatic. There's something that irks me about the book wanting to tell the story of a girl growing out of her misogynistic superstitious culture, while at the same time telling her story filled with symbolism (like her giving birth under the mother tree).

I don't remember the characters being THAT annoying in the first one, so I'll drop this now.

Got up to 23% because this came as a recommendation, but there is too whimsical and cute and predictive for my taste. Or maybe I am just exhausted from listening to the Elena character.
