This is a beautiful book. I don't want to give anything away but it's full on sci-fi and very much set in an army/spy ops environment. At first I found the army terms confusing. ( there's a glossary) but I just took the acronyms on faith after a while. It's a strange story and very unique. It sucked me in fairly fast because the main characters are just so interesting. I really hope they make a movie of this book because it's so engrossing. At the heart of it this book is about love, and good v evil and how sometimes what looks evil from the outside is actually the opposite, and vice versa. This is an exciting adventurous story and I was delighted by the fact that it's a long book. It's such a worthwhile read with characters I was routing for .
Read this nearly in one siting. It is very exciting and nail biting. Even though the physical setting and tech is all very alien to me, it is a testament to the writers ability that I was able to visualise everything. It reminded me a bit of an Andy Weir book, in that the main character had to problem solve and figure things out herself. Also, there were very few characters in the book. At times claustrophobic and scary, I found it to be more sci-fi or adventure than horror. Of course there were some horror moments, but in terms of genre I felt it was more sci-fi. I'll be looking forward to more books by this writer.
Very exciting read with likeable characters. Makes maths and science cool. Reaching Armageddon on Earth a mismatch of expert and eccentric scientists and engineers have to come up with an inter planetary solution. Who do they call on.. a disgraced science teacher who's hypothesis for extraterrestrial life is so extraordinary that he's been black listed by the academic community. His wild theories might be just what's needed. Just like that a mission to save Earth is funded and ratified by every country on Earth.
Queue an exciting space travel .. find a solution adventure.. with more than a few surprises along the way. At no point do you feel you need the suspension of disbelief.. the science and engineering talk along the way totally takes you in and makes it realistic. It was so exciting in parts that I had to skip ahead a page and then go back. 5 stars indeed. How I wish Andy Weir was a teacher. We'd have no problem with kids taking up STEM.
OMG, she's such a good writer. Sucks you right in. Fantastic story. You were really rooting for the characters and I think this is because the author has such sympathy and understanding of human foibles. This is a very empowering book for women. The main female character being such a strong person in the time of World War 2 when a lot of women had to take the place of men in the work force. I think my favorite thing about how Jennifer Egan writes though is how she deals with disability and severe learning disabilities. ( Apologies if I have the wrong terminology) She had such humanity as a writer that you feel uplifted as a reader. As if you have just been at a successful therapy session or something. She writes about the beauty in these people and the way they can be more Godly or beautiful than an able bodied/ minded person is. Sorry if my review is a bit saccharine, but it gets 5 stars because I'm still thinking about the book several weeks later and because it made me happy.
ok so I gave it 4 stars because it was so well done. a fantastic concept. but I did find it a bit of a slog at times. mind you, I couldn't put it down and I had to get to the end. I think I thought I was going to read a traditional murder mystery but it was nothing of the sort. the author deserves an award for this. It left me thinking about the book for a long time after I read it... and I think that's what good art/literature ( not the right words I know) should do.
Wow, this was fantastic. I do think if I had read it in my twenties I might have been like “huh?” It was all the better I think for me being older. The characters are so well developed and it's one of those books that shifts between timelines in such a way that you never get lost. Nearly read it in one go. Loved it. There was a kind of lesson in it too, I found it very uplifting. Yes we get older, but that's ok, sometimes our lives are better the older we get.
great read, very well written.normally I find in this kind of historical novel that's difficult to imagine the scene, characters etc, and in some novels they terms to go into a too much detail to describe the setting, outfits, etc. this book got the balance just right. I read it nearly in 1 go. I enjoyed the characters, and while it was historical, it read more like a detective fiction. this was a HIGHLY enjoyable read
loved this book. Read it when it came out and found it just so imaginative. I also found it so romantic. Going to read it this year as my older self to see if I still find the themes moving. This book is a reminder that love is not about the outside but the person within.
This book did remind me of Gone girl in terms of the fact that it has an equally strong plot. I liked the characters, and this is where Kubica excels. They were believable, and you emphatised with some of them, and wanted to slap others.
The plot centers around the kidnapping of Mia, a misfit in her world of affluence, who goes largely ignored and denounced as the “black sheep” of the family.
As the plot thickens, we begin to realise that all is not as it seems in this wealthy family, and that Mia might not be the spoilt little rich girl rebel we think she is.
This was one of those reads that I just couldn't put down, I kept on reading to find out what would happen and hoping the ending would not let the novel down. I was not disappointed.
An enjoyable easy read, just a tad on the “dark side”. I will be looking forward to any further books by this author.
Very enjoyable- one of those you read in 2 days because you have to find out what happened. I really enjoyed the characters. I had read mixed reviews and so didn't know what to expect, but it's really worth reading.
This is a riviting read under the covers till 3am and get caffeine shakes the next day book. I think i would definitely classify it as a horror/ drama and really im still not sure which it is. For those who do not read the horror genre, dont worry, its much less grisley than a cornwall. Like another reviewer stated this is very hard to define without giving away the plot. Its a superb read, with twists and turns and excentric well developed characters that you are rooting for all through the book. The dark side of the novel, the “horror” is juxtaposed nicely with the good in life, although there are times when you do have to come up for air from under the duvet and turn the lights on. like i said, superb.
This was so beautifully written. I can't believe it was a first novel. The author is extremely talented. His use of description in particular of nature was just beautiful. In juxtaposition was the difficult subject. This book is a hard read because of the subject matter but in a way it is uplifting.
