Oh my, this book was so not for me. I hated the strange names and couldn’t keep anything straight. I hated the boring, wimpy protagonist. I hated the allusions to mysterious and interesting things that happened in the past but that we never get to fully explore or understand. I hated that the “good guys” in the story are patriarchal and make women live in shacks when they are on their periods. At first I liked the idea of a vegetarian culture, but it turns out they eat meat just not poultry. There was nothing good or redeemable about this book in any aspect. I only finished it because I read until about 75% waiting for it to do literally anything interesting and when it was clear that wasn’t happening I just spite read the rest to say I finished it. Awful.
