Frances's Most Popular Reviews

I would give the overall series a solid 2.5 stars. The first two were enjoyable as in so far, things happened and while I thought the prose too pretentious, I was kind of hooked on the story. The third book though- that could have been an email. Too long winded, too much character analysis.

I was drawn in by the first third of the book, which reminded me a lot of his earlier works - where the horror elements are there but don't compare to the horror that is life - but got uninterested real quick when it got more and more into 'Dark Tower' territory. The characters introduced in the second half just fall flat and I stopped caring about how the story would end. It's not because the book is terrible. It's filled with a a lot of references to classic horror, folk lore and fairy tales and an endearing hommage to the genre. But the story itself is just lackluster and the protagonist is a teenaged boy with the soul of a 70 year old white guy from Maine.

If you want to read a King book about a twisted fairy land, I suggest The Talisman.

Colleeen Hoover redeemed herself for me. I actually started to like this one about halfway in.

I have no idea why this book has so many good reviews. Some parts were highly problematic. The plot as thin as a crepe. The only thing this book has going for itself are the spicy scenes. Sadly, the other 80 percent are just kindergarten bullshit.

My least enjoyable Sanderson Book so far. It reads like Mad Max in Space, and is both very fast paced due to the many action scenes, but also very slow due to heavy explanations of the magic systems. There alsow as no time to get into deeper character work, which made them comparatively shallow. My biggest pet peeve though, is that It's supposed to be standalone but relies heavily on the stormlight archive. Read those before you read this one, or it might lead to confusion and big spoiler reveals.
