Evidently I totally forgot to add that I was reading this but it was really quite good. I think it may have been slightly overhyped, though, so I think my expectations were a bit too high going into it. Regardless, Backman is a compelling author and I loved his writing, so I will certainly be picking up more of his work.
Interesting story, but bogged down by a lot of superfluous details.
The science was actually very well-described, I was impressed. I only noted one area that didn't seem quite, 100% correct, which was so wonderful to see, especially from an author that does not appear to have a formal science education.
I really wanted to love this but I could not get over the FMC's lying. When I first read the synopsis, I thought it was going to simply be this one big lie at the beginning, but she was a pathological liar for the first 2/3 of the book and I could not get on board. For me, it made the resolution feel both illogical and improbable and I just felt bad for the love interest.
Now. I did like the writing itself, so I will be picking up Nava's next book to give her one more chance.
It pains me to give an Ali Hazelwood book 2 stars because I usually love them, but this was not it. I had so many issues with this release and I'm really disappointed in it overall. This is her 2nd (that I know of) publication of the year, and I'm a little worried she might be starting to go through the publication cycle too quickly. I, for one, really value quality over quantity, so I'm hoping this is not the case.Ironically, I expected [b:Bride 181344829 Bride Ali Hazelwood https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1730451646l/181344829.SY75.jpg 185069024] to be the worse of her two releases this year. And I unexpectedly loved that book.
I really enjoyed this!
I do wish some of the science fiction components were explained a bit better (particularly the “cold sleep” elements).
And, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I could have done without the romance. If you can call it that. It felt really random and out of place, especially since it never really went anywhere.
