It took me awhile to read this one, and after reading some of the other reviews, I'm able to articulate why.
The book didn't feel like a memoir. It felt like a Forrest Gump-esque experience of all of the cool things with the cool kids that happened at a very special point in history. Lots of Sam, Jimmy, and Maya, but very little of Ms. Harris' life outside them. I wanted to know about her career, how she moved in the world between job changes (which I imagine were life changes) that impacted how she saw her own being. I was disappointed instead by the many “that one time with Sam / Jimmy / Maya” stories that didn't seem to offer anything in the way of really learning more about the author.
I read this book SO fast. So many twists and turns (expected and unexpected) but overall a solid story. I really appreciated being able to read from different character's perspective. It allowed me to put myself in their shoes to really consider some of the decisions they made from within their thoughts. Highly recommend.
I was enthralled by this book, and could not put it down even though there were quite a few parts that didn't quite gel with me. The twist once she went to Mexico felt unnatural to me and there were definitely some conversations where I was rolling my eyes at the flowery “love” language. Overall I enjoyed it and it kept my interest enough to want to finish it, but I felt like parts of it went on far too long and I found myself asking quite frequently “Aimee, what are you doing?!”
A pretty easy read about the road to self-discovery with a built-in workbook to help you flesh out your hopes and dreams, as well as what might lead you to yours if you don't know yet. It was very refreshing to be reminded that there is no right path, and while no new knowledge was dispensed here, it was a cool way to spend a couple of days digging into what I want for myself.
This book was HARD to read. Not because the language was difficult, but rather because everyone in the damn book experienced something tremendously tragic. Man. Woman. Child. Animal. No one was spared. And went through things so wretched that it was hard to read; at several points I wanted to stop reading. I'm not usually one for rough reads so I'm not sure whether to recommend it or not. I finished it but it should've come with a trigger warning; “dark” doesn't even begin to describe the horrific acts that are detailed in this book, from beginning to end. Read at your own risk.
The premise was interesting but the book was far too long. I was a little confused by the shifting timelines initially but ultimately that got easier to follow. The ending felt anticlimactic and I was disappointed to have gotten through the whole book without hearing from the murder victim. Not to mention the plot holes that seemed to be hastily covered or completely ignored. Overall I just did not enjoy this one.
Well, 3.5 stars. It didn't go exactly as I'd expected but I enjoyed the way each perspective was relayed through the experiences of the other characters. Sometimes, the sequencing of events got hard to follow and there were so many names that I sometimes got confused as to who belonged to who but overall, a good read.
