See allIn the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami
This might be the hardest "don't judge a book by its cover" book
I genuinely saw this book in Pinterest and decided to read it based on how cute the book cover was, and this book genuinely made me sick to my stomach
Though despite all the gore and disgusting things the writer wrote, what made my skin crawl was the thought of Frank having a cow like expression.. imagining it is jus.. creepy
"Frank’s expression underwent a disturbing change, though. It was
only for a moment, but it startled me. The artificial-looking skin of his
cheeks twitched and quivered, and his eyes lost any recognizable human
quality, as if someone had turned out the light behind them."
"He wore an expression that was beyond
hopelessness"
"Frank was watching me with his usual blank, cowlike expression"
Such a well written book, spanning only 3 days for the characters (Kenji with Frank), the way the writer writes down Kenji's thoughts is the most beautiful "indirect characterization" it's so detailed
"And if I have anything else to say to you it is this: do not think that the
person who is trying to console you lives effortlessly among the simple,
quiet words that sometimes make you feel better. His life is full of troubles
and sadness and falls far short of them. But if it were any different he could
never have found the words that he did."
