See allOne morning I found a case of books on the side of the street with a sign that read “Zu verschenken” (to give away). Browsing through the box, I found a few book in English, and a couple of them from a guy called Michael Crichton. Never heard of him (yeah, I know...). But the summaries looked interesting, with a touch of SF here and there. Now, I always liked SF and adventure as a kid. I used to read everything I could lay my hands on back in the '80s and '90s (in communist Romania), and Jules Verne was one of my favorites. I didn't read much for the past 20 years, except for schoolbooks and technical documentation.
A few months ago I started a new job, and I have to comute by train at least 1 hour each way. So I started to read again. I read a few books for the last months and It feels so good!
I picked up Prey on the following day to read on the train. After the first pages I was a bit disappointed. Where are the robots, the science, the tech? But I enjoyed reading through the family drama.
Then, it started to get more and more intriguing, and the science and tech started to show up.
I couldn't put it down. I finished it the next day.
I enjoyed this book. I really did. I only had issues with the ending. I felt it was rushed. And, it sounded to me a bit like a Hollywood movie. I mean... people die. Nobody cares. “I'm tired, I need to get some sleep”. Dude, someone just died! WTF?
I just started Pirate Latitudes. And I just think I found my next Jules Verne. GG Michael Crichton, GG.
Not Ready Player One. Maybe my expectations were high, as I really enjoyed RPO, but I was a bit disappointed. Slow to start, hastily ended. Quite predictable, a lot of detail when not needed, and sometimes I felt like the author just wanted to put something in but was to lazy to actually create the situation beforehand (stuff magically appearing in the character's “inventory”).
