See allI found this book interesting because of the stories and it is inspiring, but it really felt a little dogmatic and pushy like everyone needs to do the same thing. That might be true for serious addictions, but I'm not sure how well it translates to the less severe ones. I also felt that it could have used a bit more science to back it up. Seemed like a lot was kind of theoretical and I'm not quite sure whether there is research on these topics. On the other hand I definitely think she is addressing a very relevant topic and she has helped me to think about why I am doing certain things and how they are addictive.
The book has a few parts. The title really only refers to the first part. That was absolutely fascinating. He spoke to ‘little people' who were nazis. No one famous or important or influential. And he asked them questions about what they did, why they did it and what they believed afterwards.
It was absolutely fascinating to learn about how people became nazis and they basically all still felt long after the war that Nazism was good for them and for the country. They hadn't been convinced by the war and the information that came out in the aftermath especially about the Holocaust. Essentially the improvements in their own lives under the party were more important in evaluating the party than the impact on other people or the theories or information that were being pushed by ‘the winners' of the war.
The rest of the book is basically the author expounding his theories on the Germans, the Americans, the way the reconstruction is happening and what he thinks should happen. There are interesting things there, but also some of it is really dated and doesn't feel relevant or true.
This book was the end of the series and it felt a little bit like that's all it was. Just slowly ending all the different threats, but didn't seem to actually make much sense on its own. Also there was some weird stuff. why can't she use medical magic if she can do everything else? The whole thing with Gabe was totally circular - save him, kill him, save him.
