The Winter Folk

Thank you to Orbit for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my review.

I wanted to read The Winter Folk by Jen Julian because the premise of Appalachian gothic horror sounded intriguing.

The main character is a millennial aged woman who is retelling the story of her youth. She grows up in poverty and comes from a family that carries much generational trauma. She finds her way into the service of a magical being in a mysterious hotel that hosts entities which exist outside our realm of reality.

The novel explores themes of found family as well as the difficulty of breaking out of generational trauma. I went into the story expecting a creepy experience. At times the characters and the setting reminded me of The Labyrinth or The Neverending Story. It was not exactly as creepy as I expected, but it was sometimes unsettling. This novel left most of the magical phenomenon and creatures unexplained. It builds an interesting world while leaving room for your imagination to ponder the mysteries.

I would recommend this novel to fans of Silvia Moreno-Garcia or movies like The Labyrinth or The Neverending Story.
