At 8:15 on the 8th of August 1945, the atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Thousands of people died instantly. Many more were seriously injured and either succumbed to their injuries or died from radiation poisoning. Homes and businesses were destroyed. The landscape of the city, and the lives of the survivors, were changed forever. 🇯🇵
Kiyoshi Tanimoto was one such survivor. A Methodist minister, Kiyoshi had been just 2km away when the bomb dropped. Fearing for his wife and baby daughter, he returned to Hiroshima. The sights that greeted him shocked him. Survivors, many naked and badly burned, all leaving the city they had called home. 🇯🇵
Kiyoshi Tanimoto was a true hero of the time. He dedicated his life to helping the survivors, often while suffering the effects of radiation poisoning himself, and setting the record straight with the world, about life in Hiroshima post atomic bomb. 🇯🇵
Hiroshima, 8:15 is the account, hand written in English by Kiyoshi, of that dreadful day and all that followed. It is a harrowing, poignant read. One moment in particular stands out for me; when Kiyoshi met Robert Lewis, former Captain and co-pilot of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. 🇯🇵
The inscription on the memorial cenotaph in Hiroshima reads "Rest in Peace, for the mistake shall not be repeated." If only we could be sure. 🇯🇵
