I got this audiobook from hoopla because - surprise, surprise - Julia Whelan narrates it. And she does a fabulous job, as usual. This has an interesting premise but I didn’t really feel like it delivered it successfully. Addie LaRue makes a deal with a “god” and is granted eternal life basically, but at the cost of never being remembered. I wish I knew the specifics of this curse, like can both of them go through a door and have the memory remain? She was also unable to do things like use a phone, write, start a fire, etc. It must have been so stressful not having a permanent home or belongings.
Anyways, Addie meets a young man who somehow remembers her, and their new relationship is explored with the revelation that he (Henry) also made a deal with the same entity. I didn’t like the random allusions to Judaism, I thought that part would be integral to the plot for some reason but nope, it was just there, annoyingly. Some of the other plot points were a bit predictable but the ending threw me off and I can’t say I loved it. Addie makes a deal with Luc (demon) that she will remain with him as long as he wants her to, and she thinks she’s clever because she didn’t stipulate an exact time period and thinks she can make him hate her. It was not believable that he fell in love with her, either. Just a weird way to end the book. It was nice that Henry wrote her life story so her name will always be known, but he remembers her just because she told him to? What about the parameters of the lifted curse? You’d think Luc would make it so Henry doesn’t remember Addie, but I guess not.
Overall, loved listening to the narration of this one but didn’t love the story. Probably would have marked it DNF if I read the print or ebook.
