DNF… maybe I will come back to it but I just couldn’t get into it. I read about 30%. It felt like a big bond plot with some huge poisoning of Montreal’s water. I think as another reader said I will skip this one and The Black wolf. I am hoping we come back to the mysteries of Three Pines when the wolf series wraps up.
It took me a while to get into this novel. I love the Bosch series but this book seemed to not know exactly where It wanted to go. About 3/4 through, I finally wanted to see where it would end. I wished it had focused more on the Maddie storyline and the resolution. It gave a skeleton of a solution with the reader having to fill in a lot pieces. I am Hoping the next volume in the series is more tightly constructed. I will talk a bit of a break before I read the next Bosch book.
Once I got into this novel it moved quickly. It was Harry Bosch all the way. Harry focused single mindfully on solving the case - mostly working on his own, dragging his partner and any other law enforcement officers along with him, butting heads with everyone and in the end, the only one to see the solution to the case…
This was a fascinating read. I had never heard of Jessie Redmon Fauset before this book. Murray did a great job of bringing her back to life in this book. If you have any interest in the Harlem Renaissance - this is a must read novel. Fauset worked along side W. E. B. Du Bois working on the magazine The Crisis. She worked with many well known poets and novelists.
I could not put this book down!
This entry of the harry bosch series highlighted the character of Terry McCaleb. The book was equally divided between their two perspectives. I feel it gave another darker version of Harry - when it is only his perspective we have his inner voice that shows his humanity. I enjoyed this book and am happy to be reading the Bosch series again.
I chose to read this book for the Massachusetts Center for the book yearly reading list. This book was written in 1966 the same year I was born. It's been a long time since I've read this book. I very much enjoyed this book this time around. I believe my age and understanding of the world enriched the reading. The final scene between Danny and his father was exceptionally moving. Reading it with a parents perspective was very moving. I am so glad that I decided to read this book again.
McFadden is very popular so I thought I would read one of her novels. I didn't like it much. I found the characters annoying and didn't care much about the story by halfway though I just skimmed it to see the final wrap. There is some novels that aren't the best but it feels fun reading them...this isn't one of those novels for me.
