Books read in your formative years can shape the person you become just as much as parents, teachers and friends. What were some of the books that you remember most from your childhood years?

Why this book?
My parents got this book as a gift when I was born, and read it out loud to me before I could read myself. I love it's unique and fanciful take on what could be a very tropey "fairytale".

Why this book?
I read this when I was a little older, closer to middle school, and it really opened my eyes to how creative and interesting fantasy could be. It's a twist on the "hidden world" trope, executed in a zany way, and... you guessed it... cool female characters, and an emphasis on friendship over romantic relationships. I still love China Mieville's writing.

Why this book?
As a young girl, I loved the cool female characters and the emphasis on sisterhood/friendship (as opposed to romantic relationships). It really felt like I was seeing myself in a story, which wasn't the case with many of the fantasy books at the time.
