Fluent in Romance
I should have DNF’d this from quite early in the piece. I love MC and dark romances, and I’m usually completely unbothered by the language, club attitudes toward women, or gritty themes in these genres. In fact, they’re usually my favorite. But this book was a massive miss for me.
The MMC’s attitude toward the FMC was unbearable from the start. It wasn't just typical MC grit, his treatment of her, the lack of reassurance she desperately needed, and the overall dynamic felt toxic in a way that just wasn't enjoyable to read and not how we all love a toxic relationship just an actual really shitty one. I kept waiting for that turn where she became his number one, but it never came. The violence he committed ( don't want to give spoilers but you'll know the part in talking about when you read it ) and conversations crossed lines that felt unnecessary rather than plot-driven.
I’m genuinely shocked by the high rating on Goodreads. If you're looking for a dark MC romance with an MMC who eventually respects and cherishes his woman, this isn't it. Listen to your gut and DNF early if it's not clicking!
