At no point during the novel did I find myself genuinely intrigued by the plot, yet I kept on reading. Perhaps that's the point, isn't it?
I'm not going to say I enjoyed it, but the book did say something. I wonder if Chris ever found some meth...

Signal to Noise is steeped in a nostalgia that I felt when reading—even though I was born after most of the novel's 1980s timeline. Silvia Moreno-Garcia's blend of magical realism and coming-of-age storytelling is compelling, especially the idea of using music as a conduit for magic. It's a concept that feels both inventive and emotionally grounded.
However, I did find the dialogue lacking in authenticity at times. Some interactions feel more like stylized reenactments than natural conversations. In addition, I feel like Meche's character was unlikable in a way that doesn't add to the story. While not every character needs to be the hero, and I do give her some grace based on her age, her redemption doesn't seem realistic to me based on what she does in the latter portion of the novel.
Overall, it's a book with a strong concept and atmosphere, even if the execution doesn't always hit the right notes.
🎧 I listened to the audiobook and found it perfectly fine. It's not bad by any means, but not especially memorable either
