Giving it a rating of 2 is probably a bit unfair. I had been so pleased, thinking that this was set in the same universe as the Case of the Toxic Spell Dump (which I loved, and think I'll re-read immediately!). It may be in the same universe, or a similar one, but it's about baseball.
I kept thinking that something was going to happen. And what would happen would be another ball game.
This was a wonderful book. It was funny, and well written, and terrific. And meta - probably meta describes this, in a tremendously wonderful way.
But best of all, they've given a better fate to Jane, Edward, and Elizabeth of York than they received in real life. Oh, and Gifford/Guilford as well, but I have fewer strong feelings about him.
I want to read more now!
It was such a delight to find this in Kindle, and for such a great price! I have the original paperback edition, and had been looking for an electronic version as well.
I think this is my favourite of the three book series (and also, there's book #3 now!), mainly due to the the main character, the Lisane.
I think I last read this book sometime around high school. The afterword section of it - especially the part with the “underground frailway” had left me with a negative feeling about the world after Gilead. it bothered me for years.
Now that I've re-read this, though, I seem to recognize Professor Pieixoto as a particular type of academic, that of an academic asshole. These may well always be with us.
