No, I'm sorry... you don't get to use grief as an excuse to being self centered and expect everyone around you to fix your problems for you! It was so hard to relate to Roslyn, when she spent the whole time wallowing whilst simultaneously recognising that she could get help at any time, and go and talk to someone in order to start moving forward. But no, she decides to rely on her emotionally unavailable husband (which she already knew BTW, before marrying him), and of course he can't help her in the way she wants, because he's dealing with his own issues.
She then proceeds to ask him for a divorce (no surprise there), as it's all about her and gets mad at him for the way he responds. Make this make sense. Let's not get started on Liam, as he thinks it's ok to not talk about his family or personal issues with his partner of 9 years. I'm all for keeping some things to yourself but if you can't trust your own wife, who can you trust?
By the end of this I really could have cared less if they'd stayed together or seperated. It's a shame, as I acutally enjoyed the author's style of writing.
I clearly didn't read what everyone else read.
The inner monologue of these characters didn't coincide with the plot twists that were revealed throughout the story, which made it seem as though there was a quota of plot twists that needed to be reached in order to publish this book, regardless of whether it made sense for the story or not.
It's a shame because after reading the first chapter, this book showed promise. It just failed to deliver with every plot twist.
Never have I hated a main couple so much, and loved them at the same time! Credit where credit's due... Tarryn Fisher definitely knows how to write her characters. In the end, I think that's the point. These people are flawed, they make stupid mistakes, involve other people in their toxic decisions, and manipulate, lie and cheat. But I guess it just makes them feel all the more real.
Did I appreciate getting Caleb's POV on everything that happened in past books? Yes! But it also made me so much more frustrated at the miscommunication and lack of guts from both main characters to fight for what they actually wanted (especially if their love was so legendary). All we get is 10+ years of needless suffering and a bittersweet ending. Even after everything that happened, I was still rooting for Caleb and Olivia, what does that say about me? Lol. Glad my opinion on Leah didn't change, what a despicable human!
Even though this wasn't a typical romance - I've seen people describe this as a second chance, but it definitely doesn't feel like it (it's much more complex than that), I was hooked on this series from the start. It's definitely an underrated trilogy in my opinion.
I had to really think about how to rate this as this has many tropes that I do not enjoy, miscommunication, cheating, the main couple being separate for most of the book, both main characters acting foolishly. But it just goes to show how well this story was told, and the writing was *chef's kiss* that I couldn't rate it badly. Even though, that ending left me distraught.
I got so invested in this couple, and just wanted to scream at Olivia so she would stop being her own worst enemy. But then Caleb didn't handle things in the best way either. He knew how guarded she was with her feelings, so why the mind games to get her to open up in the way he wanted? In the end, they played a game neither of them could win.
I don't know if I read something different to everyone else but this was so disappointing. The plot was just so unnecessarily confusing when everything culminated at the end. Too many lies, too many plot points to try and keep the story interesting, and it was just a mess.
What makes it worst is the introduction of the MCs was actually pretty good. Lachlan was a mysterious MMC, and Mack seemed like a strong, kick ass FMC with a very specific purpose to getting herself involved in this whole mafia world, until she crosses paths with Lachlan and it all just goes out the window. Like why?
In the end, the whole reveal of the traitors and such was just underwhelming. I will give the rest of this series a shot, as I've heard the second book is better and I'm on a dark romance kick right now, but I will definitely lower my standards for this series as this book was definitely not it.
I simply do not have the words for how deeply this series will be completely ingrained in my mind. This had me hooked from beginning to end, and I could not stop flying through all five books. I never thought this book would affect me in the way it did, even questioning myself several times on how I wanted it to end. Ultimately, I could not have asked for a better ending!
3 stars only for Maximus! He deserves the world.
When I started reading Cora Reilly's books, I did not think I'd be here over 20 books later having inhaled her whole universe. I don't know what it is about her books, they're not the best thing ever written, but they're just so easy to read, with a couple of gems sprinked in between. Although Cora, would it kill you to do a grammar check on your books?? It's literally the bare minimum I ask for at this point.
4 stars, but only because Gianna and Matteo's chemistry was so explosive!! Honestly, Gianna was a little disappointing in this book. She acted so sefishly throughout most of this, even when internally she spent most of the book admitting to herself that her life wasn't as bad as she'd made it out to be. She didn't even enjoy it when she ran away, basically confessing she missed the fancy clothes and Matteo being more of a man than anyone else she'd ever met.
So why did she have to make it so difficult for herself at the end?! This I don't understand. You're telling me that even after she finally allowed herself to confess her true feelings to herself, she was still willing to walk away because of her stubborn pride?! Hello??? Girl, you can literally have everything you want, but you don't want to admit everyone else was right all along. Talk about being your own worst enemy. And then, she finally decides to go back because of a text she got from her sister? As if she didn't know Matteo was in a delicate state of health? It just makes no sense, and was a massive letdown.
It might just be me but I don't know, I expected... more?! I mean, it is a mafia book at the end of the day. Of course, as is usually the case, I definitely preferred the MMC to the FMC. I usually find with mafia stories, it seems to be hard to write a really good FMC, but it hasn't put me off this series. It definitely has potential, so we'll see.
I'm particularly looking forward to Mateo and Gianna's story, they're explosive!
I was cautious coming into this as this was probably one of the most hyped books I've read so far, and I was rightly so. The sad thing is I enjoy greek mythology which made this even more disappointing.
It was just a whole load of nothing, no action, even the romance was fell a little flat. Yet this was beautifully written. I don't know, I'm just a little confused with this.
