I've decided to read the books before diving into Heated Rivalry, so here I stand with book 1, Game Changer, finished. It's an incredibly easy read, tons of sex but it's... Lackluster. Don't get me wrong, I like reading a hot bang sesh (and there were a couple of instances in this book where I find myself all hot and bothered) but it feels like the author just wanted to write about two men fucking rather than one man finally being able to be free of his lifelong secret. A lot of the dialogue felt fake, like it was forcing the subjects to be (for lack of a better word) more feminine. Softer, kinder, sweeter. Not to say that men aren't capable of feeling deep down, that's far from the truth, but I found myself reading some of the dialogue and rolling my eyes. There are cute moments and while I'm not a guy or anything other than hetero, I can't imagine falling in love with someone in 2 months. The timeline is hyper sped up and unrealistic, because in order to get the ending that the author wanted, it had to happen quick. It's like someone told you how they met in 5 minutes, rather than going into any nuances of actually building a relationship. Flirt, fuck, and move in... That's it.
There's very little depth to the characters and it very much reads like a subpar Tumblr fanfic, but I'm very happy this is making waves in the incredibly bigoted hockey world. I'll continue on in the series but sadly I'm not looking as forward to the rest of it now that I've got this first book finished.
Magical, in the simplest sense of the word
This might be a terrible review but the only way I can describe how I feel about this book is that it's the first one I've finished in over a year because nothing else could hold my attention or keep me wanting more the way this novel did. Onto the next... Immediately.
This Was A Total Hate-Read
You ever get a few pages into a book and already know it's going to be terrible, but want to finally finish a book in time for your monthly book club meeting so you persevere through weak, predictable characters and the worst dialogue you've ever seen? Not to mention the whole trope of rape being used as the main plot point of a woman's history. Do better, I beg you.
I'm glad this book is done so I can go back to something worthwhile. There are several reasons it was free on Amazon and had no hold time at the library. Save yourself.
If you don't need to sleep, read this book
It's 2:00 a.m. and I just finished reading this book because I got to the last four chapters and could not stop myself. The build-up from the last book, the constant tension between everyone in existence, the cat and mouse games... This book has it all and there wasn't a single part that didn't have me enthralled. On to book 6 because while it's the middle of the night, I need more.
