“It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us.”
― Colleen Hoover, It Ends with Us
Now I can finally tell people that I have read It ends with us (even though their next question would most likely be ‘‘Have you read It Starts with us?''). The main reason I put this book off for so long was because of the hype. Sometimes I do feel the need to join the hype and read the books when its still in that ‘‘hype era'' but most of the time, I read the books when the hype has gone down. So if you ask me if this was worth the hype, I would honestly reply with ‘‘Yes and No''. The reason I'm saying it wasn't worth the hype is mostly because it is a normal book. It is a normal Coho book but the only difference is that it educated me on domestic abuse and how sometimes people make sacrifices when being abused. But I'm also saying it is worth the hype because like I said, the book informs you the different povs of Abuse and how sometimes you need to be your knight in shining armor
.Minor spoilers ahead: There is a pre-abused Lily who used to be angry at her mother for not leaving her father and bearing all the abuse and then there is a post-abused Lily who understood what her mother went through and instead decided not to continue this cycle thereby saving her child from a toxic household.By seeing Lily have a withdrawal behavior while being on a break with Ryle opened my eyes and showed me how it could be difficult for people to leave their abusers because chances are they are still madly in love with them.
Now I just want to take a moment and say ALLYSA IS LITERALLY THE BEST FRIEND ANYONE COULD ASK FOR, like the moment Lily told everything and Allysa still supported her despite being Ryle's sister. I stan Allysa! Also Atlas was the right choice from the start and I am kinda pissed that she never saw that properly, she should have dumped Ryle in the start and got together with Atlas.
But please try to give this book a chance (even if it isn't to you expectations)
“I spent half my time loving her and the other half hiding how much I loved her.” -Evelyn Hugo (The seven husbands of Evelyn HugoOne of the best and most iconic quotes in this whole book. Ever since I was a child, I would see the actresses and actors on the screens and hope that I would be like them, that I would stand where they stood and make my mark. But as time passed, I realized that the life that was portrayed in the screens was not even close to reality. I realized that the movie industry was not as dazzling as people believed it to be, it was a place where people ruthlessly compete with each other to become more famous than others, to become a household name. And I believe that ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' is a perfect portrayal of it.I'm going to be fully honest and say that it took me a long time to finally bring myself to read it. For some reason I was in a slump and I had absolutely no interest nor motivation to actually finish it. But I finally decided to do it, and I'm glad I did because somewhere along the lines, I fell in love with it. The starting of the book as many people have said, was not exactly the best, but soon you will forget that the person you are reading about is not actually real. She never existed. I had to remind myself that as well because there were moments I would forget that I've never seen Evelyn Hugo on screen. The whole story was telling the journey of Evelyn and how she quickly became one of the most famous actresses known. She fought her way through the competition, determined to reach the top. As much as I loved Evelyn in the book I will never admit that she was a saint, she did the most dirtiest tricks just to keep the spotlight on her, she kept fooling the paparazzi and the press and made them believe what she wanted them to believe. This made me realize that even though she was devious, she was also smart, because honestly who can think of so many backup plans to make sure her name's not ruinedSPOILERS (SORTA?) AHEAD In this whole book, there were only 3 people that Evelyn truly loved:1. CELIA ST. JAMES : Like c'mon do I even need to explain myself over here? I truly believe that ever since she met her, Celia was the one for Evelyn, no one else compared to her. Even when they broke up and were with other people, they came back to each other because they were made for each other. Evelyn helped her to be one of the most famous actresses, Celia helped her to find herself. When compared to all of Evelyn's husbands, her wife was one of her best marriages and most importantly, Evelyn's true love.2. HARRY CAMERON : If 'platonic soulmates' do exist, Evelyn and Harry are the definition of it. Both of them loved each other in their own ways. Harry helped Evelyn to reach her heights and always stood by her and never once showcased her like a trophy and Evelyn made sure that he was doing well and not doing anything reckless when John died. They loved and cared for each other like any best friends, and even though both of them were each other's beards, Harry Cameron was one of Evelyn's real husbands, one that she truly loved with her whole heart3. CONNOR CAMERON : One thing I respected the most about Evelyn was the fact that she truly loved her daughter and always included her for when she got married. Even when she was crying in front of Celia begging her to take her back and promising she would give everything up, she never let go of Connor. Even when she got married to Max *cough* asshole *cough*, she reminded him that Connor would be a part of their life too and if he's taking Evelyn in his life, he would be taking Connor too. She never abandoned her child for stardom nor did she push her child away from her. She always took care of her, stood her ground and most importantly reminded Connor in her last few days that she was the best thing that happened to her life. She may not have been the perfect mother but she was a mother who took care of her child, made sure that she talked to someone, made friends and for that I admire her.To summarize: [b:The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo 32620332 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Taylor Jenkins Reid https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1498169036l/32620332.SY75.jpg 46885151] is an amazing book and whether you like it or not, it has to be read atleast once to be reminded of how Hollywood was the same even in the 1950's and how the LGBTQ+ community was treated. It definitely is a 4.25-4.75 read for me and I definitely loved it more than Malibu Rising.
