Alison Bechdel is an American cartoonist and graphic novelist, born in 1960, and a major figure in lesbian and LGBTQ+ comics. She is best known for her autobiographical graphic novels Fun Home, Are You My Mother? and The Secret to Superhuman Strength. In 1985, she introduced the now-famous Bechdel Test, a cultural touchstone used to assess the representation of women in film. Her work has received numerous awards, including Eisner Awards and a MacArthur Fellowship, and she was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2020.
