Gary W. Gallagher

Gary W. Gallagher is the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War Emeritus at the University of Virginia. The author or editor of numerous books, most recently The Enduring Civil War: Reflections on the Great American Crisis (2020), The American War: A History of the Civil War Era (2nd. ed., 2019) The Union War (2011) and Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Loyalty (2013), he has also participated in more than five dozen television projects in the field, and is the recipient of the University of Virginia's highest teaching award.
