John Wesley Dennis (1903–1966) was an American illustrator best known for his vivid depictions of horses. Born in Davisville, Massachusetts, he left high school early and worked in Boston as a fashion sketch artist before pursuing his passion for equine art. After studying anatomy and memory drawing in France under Lowes Dalbiac Luard, he built a career sketching racehorses, illustrating for magazines, and selling portraits to horse owners and enthusiasts like Bing Crosby. His big break in children’s literature came when Viking Press published his self-written and illustrated book Flip in 1941, beginning a prolific career in children’s publishing
