Another book I was misguided in purchasing online, only to find it was a missionary tale. Still after 8 years on my shelf I hoped that I could salvage something from it and find the travel aspect entertaining. Clearly I am not the target market for this book, and my rating will reflect that.
The title refers to the route of the husband and wife missionary team's from Darjeeling to Namche Bazaar, then on to Kathmandu, being approximately a 400 mile trek.
Unfortunately there is just too much pious preaching in the text for me to have taken much enjoyment from this book. I skipped through it pretty quickly, taking in the descriptions of the Nepalese villages, the people and the places they visited. I guess I enjoyed these aspects enough to carry on reading, but there was an awkwardness in the obtuse description of peoples views (of religion in particular) and the fact that any minor setback was part of God's plan and everything seen through rose tinted glasses.

“I recalled some of the pictures we had seen of their gods; some were far too disgusting to describe.”
And despite being offered the hospitality of a monastery, the author couldn't resist a dig: P131
The oblong room was surmounted by a dome from which a long cone arose. This gave the appearance that it was made of real gold... every tier had precious stones around it. There was no lack in any of the monasteries we have seen.
Yeah, not enough in this to salvage more than 1.5 stars, but I will round it up.
