'If you grew up reading Jane Austen and Agatha Christie (or are a fan of the more recent Bridgerton and Knives Out), you will adore A Most Agreeable Murder' Kate Stayman-London, author of One to Watch 'A delightfully entertaining debut! Be prepared to laugh out loud at the comedy, gasp at the murder mystery, and altogether have a thoroughly great time!' India Holton, author of The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels 'I adored this: a comedy of manners meets murder mystery, just as thrilling as it is gorgeous' Sophie Irwin, author of A Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting Beatrice Steele has none of the accomplishments of a true lady: she is terrible at needlework, has no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Little does anyone know that Beatrice also harbours a dark secret: an obsession with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper. For her family's sake, she's vowed to put this most unladylike obsession behind her. Eligible bachelor Edmund Croaksworth is set to attend the autumnal ball, and the Steele family hopes that her eldest sister Louisa will steal his heart. Their future depends on this match! Beatrice needs be on her best behaviour... though that's made more difficult when a disgraced yet strangely alluring detective inexplicably shows up to the ball. Just as Beatrice thinks she's gotten away with it, Croaksworth drops dead in the middle of a minuet. As a storm rages outside, the evening descends into a frenzy as it becomes clear they are trapped with a killer. But maybe, just maybe, it's Beatrice's time to shine... Beatrice Steele is a lady. However, if anyone knew how she spent her free time, her reputation would be ruined.
Beatrice loves murder. Well, not murder, but justice and solving murders. She dreams of being an Inspector like the ones she reads about.
Little does she know, her skills might just be put to the test in real life.
I had a fun time with this one. The characters all have their weird and humorous little quirks.
It's very hard to solve a murder when everyone is guilty of something.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an e-arc.
Mostly enjoyable, with some fairly large exceptions. As others have noted, an odd and unexpected tale, which left me feeling befuddled at times. I'm not a huge satire fan, so that may have been part of my feeling lost occasionally. There is one giant glaring plot hole that drove me nuts and was never resolved, but overall the twists were fun. I saw the culprit coming a mile away, though not the motive and backstory. All in all, a story characterized by contradictions.

This book tried too hard to be funny sometimes, but otherwise, it was a cosy enough mystery. Don't expect any huge plot twists, it's all quite easily decipherable yet also a fun read. I guess it's sort of satire on the Regency era?
If you're one to get irked by the discrepancies of an NA writer writing Regency, perhaps don't read this. It might frustrate you.
