A Song for Arbonne by Guy Gavriel Kay

Based on the troubadour culture that rose in Provence during the High Middle Ages, this panoramic, absorbing novel beautifully creates an alternate version of the medieval world.

The matriarchal, cultured land of Arbonne is rent by a feud between its two most powerful dukes, the noble troubador Bertran de Talair and Urte de Miraval, over long-dead Aelis, lover of one, wife of the other and once heir to the country's throne.

To the north lies militaristic Gorhaut, whose inhabitants worship the militant god Corannos and are ruled by corrupt, womanizing King Ademar. His chief advisor, the high priest of Corannos, is determined to eradicate the worship of a female deity, whose followers live to the south.

Into this cauldron of brewing disaster comes the mysterious Gorhaut mercenary Blaise, who takes service with Bertran and averts an attempt on his life. The revelation of Blaise's lineage and a claim for sanctuary by his sister-in-law sets the stage for a brutal clash between the two cultures. Intertwined is the tale of a young woman troubadour whose role suggests the sweep of the drama to come.

After Tigana and now A Song for Arbonne, it is clear that Guy Gavriel Kay can weave a complete, satisfying story in one standalone book. This novel is a beautiful tale of love and loss in the land of Arbonne. Kay's character development and worldbuilding are outstanding and his lyrical prose is a perfect match for a sweeping story of troubadours amid a unique medieval world.

Al sinds Lord of the Rings en zijn Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo! Ring a dong! hop along! Fal lal the willow! Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo! heb ik een gloeiende hekel aan gezang en poëzie in fictieboeken.

Dat trekt meestal op niets, dat is meestal zo cringe als maar kan zijn, en ik sla het dan ook meestal gewoon in één beweging over. Zelfs als ik het eigenlijk wellicht niet zou moeten doen, wegens belangrijk voor het plot en allerlei.

In een audioboek is er helaas niet onderuit te komen.

Het was al een tijd geleden dat ik Song for Arbonne gelezen had: ‘t is fantasy, maar voor mensen die eens wat anders willen dan de zoveelste op Angelsaksische archetypes gebaseerde dinges. De Provence in de hoge middeleeuwen – denk troubadours, trouveres, hoofse liefde, doe er een scheut echo's van de Albigenzische kruistochten bij en hey presto.

Fijne personages, fijne wereld, maar bij het herlezen (herbeluisteren) viel me vooral op hoe enorm kort het verhaal is, en hoe weinig er eigenlijk maar gebeurt. Een stuk of vier vijf set pieces en dat is dat: in een coverblurb schrijft de San Francisco Chronicle “Elegant, sweeping and colorful... one of those books you wish would never end”, en daarin heeft de recensent gelijk.

Het boek eindigt namelijk op het moment dat ik het graag had zien beginnen: een jongste zoon die net tegen zijn vader en zijn rechtmatige koning gevochten heeft, zijn oudere broer verloren is, en nu zelf koning wordt van een land dat op gruwelijke wijze oorlog aan het voeren was (met martelingen en verkrachtingen). Een hoofdpersonage dat nu dus met de gebakken peren van de faits accomplis van niet alleen deze laatste maar ook de vorige oorlog zit.

Maar bon.

Fijn boek voor wie zich graag eens vervoerd ziet naar een alternatieve versie van de pakweg 12de eeuw, op een wereld met twee manen waar mensen zowel een God als een Godin aanbidden; maar die voor de rest Zuid-Frankrijk had kunnen zijn.

Neem die poëzie en in het audioboek het zingen (oh God, het zingen) er dan maar bij, ‘t valt uiteindelijk allemaal mee.

Tragedy, romance, vengeance, war... you can find all that and much more in this beautifully written novel by one of my favorite authors.It took me a while to get into the book, but once the ball got rolling, it never stopped. Beware the many typos in this edition–it really takes you out of the story! (seriously, if it weren't for so many spelling/grammar issues in the story, I would have given this book a 5 star rating...)Highly recommended for fantasy fans looking for a stand-alone novel because with so many multiple fantasy series out there, it is refreshing to pick up a book with a satisfying ending.
