An anthology of short stories, Wilkie Collins's After Dark (1856) first appeared in 1852 in Household Words. The Traveller's Story follows the immature Faulkner to a gambling house in Paris. He sleeps in a bed that may cause his death. The Lawyer's Story is about how Miss Smith's marriage to a wealthy young man may be marred by scandal.
