A government special agent known only as the Signalman gets off a train on a stunningly hot morning in Winslow, Arizona. Later that day he meets a woman in a diner to exchange information about an event that happened a week earlier for which neither has an explanation, but which haunts the Signalman. In a ranch house near the shore of the Salton Sea a cult leader gathers up the weak and susceptible — the Children of the Next Level — and offers them something to believe in and a chance for transcendence. The future is coming and they will help to usher it in. A day after the events at the ranch house which disturbed the Signalman so deeply that he and his government sought out help from ‘other’ sources, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory abruptly loses contact with NASA's interplanetary probe New Horizons. Something out beyond the orbit of Pluto has made contact. And a woman floating outside of time looks to the future and the past for answers to what can save humanity. Agents of Dreamland is a new Lovecraftian horror novella from award-winning author Caitlín R. Kiernan. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This is a strange, strange book, set in a strange, strange version of our world. But strange as it is, it is completely compelling. It tells the story of a government organisation trying to protect the world, but doomed to ultimate failure. It can be described as Lovecraft-inspired dark horror. Well worth the read.
Agents of Dreamland by Caitlin R. Kiernan is a strange and compelling novella. The book blends conspiracy theories ranging from UFOs to cryptids and more with Lovecraftian elements, Biblical imagery, and more. Part apocalypse, part X-Files, something unique and different. I liked this book, although I had a challenging time following it as it weaved through different characters, times, places, etc. The text is loaded with references and ideas and it sometimes seemed overwhelming (perhaps as conspiracy theories and cosmic horror often are). Despite sometimes feeling confused, I was still intrigued by the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is not actually a complete story. It is, in fact, the beginning portion of a longer story.
With that in mind, however, it is a well-written story that, in my opinion, hooks the reader into investing in the story as it proceeds.
The story begins with a meeting between the Signalman and Immacolata Sexton. The Signalman is an operative for some American spook agency. He seems to be past his prime and we never find out what his name is or why he is the “signalman.” Sexton is scary spooky in some undescribed way. There is a supernatural vibe to her. The two meet and exchange cryptic bits of information and then go their separate ways.
There is a mystery involving a cult, a cult that has been exposed to a fungus. The fungus is taking over their bodies. There are references to the “Old Ones” and a Lovecraftian corpse is discovered. There are premonitions about the future.
In other words, this story is an homage to H.P. Lovecraft's universe. The story is well-written and engaging. The only drawback is that it was far shorter than it ought to have been.
I literally picked this up on a whim at my library. I'd never heard anything about it but something just stood out to me and so I pulled it off the shelf and read the synopsis. Still unsure I put it back but it just kept calling to me and so I figured “it's only 120 pages might as well just give it a shot”
I LOVED THIS.
Why is no one talking about this book when it's so good???
First off; It already has so many of the things I like in a horror so that set us up for success from the beginning (cults, unreliable narrators, mushroom horror? Or like fungal horror? Google says it's called “Sporror” Idk but I love that shit).
And the writing was so beautiful. It was a little dense at times with a lot of big words that would trip me up in a few paragraphs but after rereading said paragraphs I was fine.
This was just so creepy, and eerie and just so GOOD.
Please read this book. It deserves more hype.
