I just finished An affair of spies by Ronald H Balson and here are my thoughts.
Nathan Silverman grew up watching the atrocities committed against his fellow jews and one day, while at university saw a poster that would change his path. He enlists to fight the nazis. It isn't long before he is put on a special mission.
He is trained to become a spy... He is to spy upon the Manhattan project. With the war heating up, Nathan learns the allies are also working on a nuclear weapon and one of the physicists is hoping to defect. A man who knew his father. It's Nathan's mission to get him out safely.
Along the way Nathan meets and begins to fall for Dr. Allison Fisher but will their relationship put them both in more danger?
The writing was spectacular and drew me instantly. I loved all the espionage and spy elements in the book. The characters were really well thought out and I could tell the book was well researched. It was the Manhattan project that really caught my attention and put this book on my radar.
I love world war 2 books and while this one was set in the era, you don't have to be a fan of historical to enjoy this well written novel. The dialogue felt a little forced in places but other than that, a very enjoyable book!
This book gets a little technical in places which might not be a huge turn on for some people but I really enjoyed it. I felt like I learned something!
Definitely worth the read!
4 stars.
