I didn't read the Justice League crossover that leads into this, but I rather suspect I didn't need to, since this story is almost entirely self-contained. In fact, there's just a couple of brief appearances by Mera to even remind us that we're still in the same continuity as before. The story sees an amnesiac and apparently power-less Aquaman washing up on an uncharted island that doesn't seem to be part of the normal world. From there, things get mythic, and, while it still ends in a big fight, there is a feeling of the untamed power of the sea in a story that's partly told through recounting of a divine legend. It's a change of pace from the usual, and wouldn't work if it was any longer, but it's well written with some good art.
