Re-read in December 2015:
Everything I thought originally about this book still stands. It's hauntingly beautiful and it makes so, so much sense in every way. Finally, a YA book where people just feel things without a specific reason. It's a gorgeous tale of family, of friends, of love. I cannot recommend it enough.
(Original review November 2013):
This book... Such a beautifully constructed, slow-moving (but not boringly so), coming of age perfect tale of two boys, both of which I felt extremely connected to in the end, and afterwards. It's so well done that I found myself teary at multiple points due to the sheer emotion that Benjamin Alire Sàenz communicates through his carefully constructed words. Last Night I Sang To The Monster is a very touching book and I was certain that nothing else he wrote could even come close, but I was wrong. It's impossible to explain the reality that he channels when he writes. I don't even have any words to describe how much I loved, and will continue to love, it. It's ridiculous. Such a talented guy whose writing is out of this world. No amount of recommendations or five-star reviews will justify how much you should read this. Do it right now, okay. You won't regret it, I promise you.
I thought I wouldn't love this one as much as I did, but god.
This book was relatable and heartfelt. It was heartbreaking and touching and it got emotions and thoughs across so extremely well. I found everything believable and relatable and it was just a beautiful book.
Not to mention the gay romance in it, taking a while to take shape which made me beg so desperately for it but it was all worth the while.
This one absolutely deserves 5/5 stars
An easy read but relied too heavily on dialogue for first-person narration. I don't think it would have gotten so many accolades if there were more books which deal with boys struggling with thier sexuality and identity (as there should be, and will in time.)
