It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield's life. With her undead lover Bones at her side, she's successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat's worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover has finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger. And if that wasn't enough, a woman from Bones' past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat's about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she's learnt as a special agent won't help her here. She's going to have to fully embrace her vampire instincts if she's going to save herself - and Bones - from a fate worse than the grave.

Cat is definitely coming into her own now, and her relationship with Bones is portrayed far more healthily than most in the paranormal romance category. I love the fact that she demands that he permit her to stand as his equal, rather than treat her like a delicate thing to be protected.
The plot is more interesting than I recall in previous excursions, while building on the earlier books. I know there's another volume either planned or on the shelves, and I plan to read it. I wasn't so sure after the last book, but I'm glad I gave this one a chance.
I still contend that the cover art, no matter how lovely, shows a woman in a position that cannot be obtained by any human who wants to walk again. Cat is supposed to be half-vampire, but that hasn't been said to give her more flexibility—increased strength, speed, and healing power, yes, but not this sort of oddity. Yes, it's a minor nit to pick, but it has bugged me since the first time I saw the cover.
The drama in this one was a bit too much for me. I didn't really get what Patra's motivation was, it was confusing and I ultimately didn't care THAT much. I feel like Patra could've been a much cooler story given her back story and she sounds like the wronged one in her backstory so I also kinda felt bad for her and couldn't get behind the war.
Best Cat & Bones so far. I always seem to enjoy it when a human (or in this case, human-ish) steps up and accepts vampire responsibilities.
