Not particularly impressed by this book. The general idea behind the plot is fine - an exploratory trip to Antarctica uncovers mysterious ruins. But the overall execution didn't sit well with me.
Unlike his previous books, I couldn't feel any suspense or horror out if it. Everything's too literal and too descriptive. How could two explorers through an ancient ruins of another civilisation come to such clear and detailed conclusions about that civilisation from murals and sculptures alone? I just didn't find that believable.
It's because of such clear descriptions and exactly what's happening that makes the book lose that horror feeling. With the exception of the final encounter, much of the rest was a rather lackluster narrative.
Had to read (listen to the audiobook) twice before this made any sort of sense to me. Ridiculously technical and descriptive and there was no dialogue. Did not enjoy it whatsoever.
Oh fuck yes. Classic lit has been so hit or miss for me but man this is the real deal. I've also heard mixed things about H.P. Lovecraft, but he really didn't disappoint.
Read along with the audiobook. I recommend doing so! It really creates the right atmosphere.
