In Beyond Magenta, six teens tell what it is like for them to be members of the transgender community. Portraits and family photographs grace the pages, adding immediacy to the emotional and physical journeys of these unwaveringly honest young adults.

I'm glad this book exists–I think it's a very approachable introduction to trans* concepts. Although this is in depth interviews with 6 different teens, which obviously can't be totally inclusive of everyone's experiences, I think it has a lot more diversity than the sort of typical media narrative of transition (MTF, very glamorous and traditionally femme-looking) and just shows that there are so many more possibilities. (Of course it could be MORE diverse–but, again, it's a good start.)
The portraits are compelling. There are also pretty good resources in the backmatter, although–at this point this book is 2 years old so honestly some of it's already dated. Hopefully there will be a new edition or another book along these lines?!
I think this book had good intentions but the execution was not that great. Didn't appreciate that the book looked at trans people from a cis gaze. Hope a trans author publishes on how it's like to be trans someday
