A provocative, eye-opening, and original book on the science of sexuality beyond gender from an internationally bestselling pop-psychologist Despite all the welcome changes that have happened in our culture and laws over the past few decades in regards to sexuality, the subject remains one of the most influential but least understood aspects of our lives. For psychologist and bestselling author Julia Shaw, this is both professional and personal--Shaw studies the science of sexuality and she herself is proudly and vocally bisexual. It's an admission, she writes, that usually causes people's pupils to dilate, their cheeks to flush, and their questions to start flowing. Ask people to name famous bisexual actors, politicians, writers, or scientists, and they draw a blank. Despite statistics that show bisexuality is more common than homosexuality, bisexuality is often invisible. In BI: The Hidden Culture, History, and Science of Bisexuality, Shaw probes the science and culture of attraction beyond the binary. From the invention of heterosexuality to the history of the Kinsey scale, as well as asylum seekers trying to defend their bisexuality in a court of law, there is so much more to explore than most have ever realized. Drawing on her own original research--and her own experiences--this is a personal and scientific manifesto; it's an exploration of the complexities of the human sexual experience and a declaration of love and respect for the nonconformists among us.

Definitely not the typical book I read, but definitely a very interesting and informing. Loved to see Bisexuality history in an entire book and learning lots about myself too. Not the kind of book you binge in a week, but would recommend to anyone who wants to know more LGBTQ+ history.
Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for ARC in exchange for an honest review
An enlightening account of the history of the bisexual label, what it means for individuals, how it came to be and it's influences from the animal kingdom and human history. I listened to the audiobook version, read by the author herself and highlight recommend if you're looking for a more scientific approach to bisexual history
3.5 Great primer for those who have recently come out or for allies. I think the concept of shifting your perspective to “bisexuality is the majority default” can be helpful and healing to a lot of people vs feeling like you are an outlier.
Would have really liked more reflection on the discrimination happening in western countries, particularly the USA. While it is touched on, I think there was room to go further especially in regard to BIPOC trans folx who are bisexual.

Bi: The Hidden Culture, History and Science of Bisexuality by Julia Shaw
“To exclude bisexuality from discussions of history, culture, or science is to belittle the human capacity for love and attraction. It also means that people with bisexual desires are often left abandoned in their search for a place in the world.”
Synopsis:
“ ‘Hetero' comes from the Greek heteros which means another, while ‘homos' means same, and both are melded with the Latin word ‘sexus'. Not long after this, ‘bi', or two, started to be used to refer to people who had both homosexual and heterosexual desires. A way that bisexual researchers often talk about this is that the ‘bi' in bisexual means two, but the two are not ‘men' and ‘women', they are ‘same' and ‘other'.”
My Thoughts:
“Many of our queer elders fought for their lives, and for our rights, and only some survived to tell the tale.”
