This was a fascinating and detailed look at the Attica Prison Uprising of 1971. Protesting mistreatment, prisoners took over the Attica Prison and held some civilians and corrections officers hostage. Following failed negotiations, New York State Police used EXCESSIVE force to retake the prison. The brutality on the part of the part of the police was extraordinary and very hard to read at times. Misinformation and cover-ups were pervasive after the retaking. The book also details the decades long legal battles to gain some semblance of justice on the part of the prisoners and hostages. Dismayed to learn that only one state trooper was ever indicted and the State of New York never officially admitted wrong doing. Really eye opening look at a part of history I knew nothing about.
