I was expecting high drama and wuxia action when I picked this book up, and I definitely got both. I also got the filial duty vs. personal desire conflict that's one of the cornerstones of a lot of Chinese literature. What I did NOT expect nor appreciate was the white male protagonist. Constantly visualizing Matt Damon instead of Andy Lau or Godfrey Gao in the romantic lead was rather disruptive to my reading enjoyment, to say the least. Hopefully the other books aren't like that.
