The entire time I was listening to this book, which felt exactly as if I were being yelled at for however long it took me to get through it, I was thinking how can I review this? Clearly, I am not smart enough to understand why this slugfest is so genius.
I find myself on the defensive.
It's not that I don't appreciate unlikable main characters. In fact, I love them (see: all of Odessa Moshfegh's works). Call Me Zebra had a plot (of sorts) about a woman retracing her path of exile from the US back to...it doesn't matter, she only really goes 3 places. I can't find a point to this story.
It did open my mind up to some questions, so if your book group is going to attempt this (poor you) maybe my notes will help?
One. Is this what happens when someone replaces a fervent belief of religion with literature?
Two. I saw several reviews that said this was THE novel of exiles, I so very much hope that is NOT the case. I don't feel as though I learned anything about what it is like to be an exile. I do not believe Zebra would have felt at home anywhere.
Three. What in the hell does Ludo see in Zebra? He's torturing himself!
Four. Why is no one feeding that bird?
