When Paul Casablancas, Claire DeWitt's musician ex-boyfriend, is found dead in his Mission District home, the police are convinced it's a simple robbery. But Claire knows nothing is ever simple. With the help of her new assistant, Claude, Claire follows the clues, finding hints to Paul's fate in her other cases -- especially that of a missing girl in the gritty 1980s East Village and a modern-day miniature horse theft in Marin.

Title character is a druggy, tattooed detective who steals pills from the medicine cabinets of her friends and strangers and who barely survives this installment. Loved it. Going back to read the first one now.
I liked this one better than the first one. Claire is still the same as previously, but it seemed less pandering. There was a lot of cocaine and other drugs. I'm glad someone finally called her out on it. That helped put everything in perspective. We are very much following Claire, so when she doesn't focus on what is going on with her, we don't get it either.
I will read the 3rd one to finish out this trilogy.
