This was a sweet and poignant slice of life and it just spoke to me on so many levels. The wonderful grandmother who just surprises you at every turn, the godmother who's just not having her Thanksgiving meddled with by her sister and the adorable boyfriend who is willing to go in the closet for our narrator. And the narrator, Julio, who made me remember my younger self in ways I hadn't in a while. Even though I'm not a young gay man dealing with coming out to a not so accepting family, I was and am (proudly) the odd bird out in a Dominican family peopled by the seriously religious to the merengue blasting, “tres golpes” eating group for which I'm still not quite the real deal. His made me feel what it was like being in the space of not yet being in control of your life but right on threshold of doing so and what an exhilarating time it can be.
Thank you for sharing Julio. Thank you.
