I just finished Dark Room Etiquette by @robinroe and here are my thoughts!!
Sayers has it all. The money, the privilege, the girl and the mapped out future.
That is until one day when he gets into a car accident and then everything changes.
The man tells him his whole life is a lie. This man is telling him he is someone else. To survive Sayers must play the role but the longer he is trapped in the windowless room, the more his reality blurs and he faces an unknown future, with his mind slowly slipping away.
I needed a minute to process everything I had just read. I closed the book slowly and released a breath I didn't know I was holding (haha shhh).
This is literally my worst nightmare. Being kidnapped by some crazed loony or having one of my kids go missing... shudder. Robin literally took my worst fears and bought them right to the surface.
I really enjoyed how Sayers started out as unlikable. You can feel the arrogance rolling off him in waves. He wore his privilege like some badge of honor. Watching the way his life unfolded during his captivity and after, really shows how fragile our minds truly are. I also really adored watching the dynamics change with people he knew after.
The pace was a little slower than I normally like but it really worked for this book. You can't rush through something like this. I hate questions I have going unanswered in books. This is my only complaint. They never really explained Caleb, the kidnapper. Was Daniel real? I think he must have been. Did his son die? Disappear? Did something happen to cause his mind to break? Did he use the excuse of “Daniel” to allow himself to commit atrocities to kids? Was he just a psycho or was there more to the story? I guess it wasn't relevant to the story but it was to me haha.
4.5 stars as far as YA novels go, this one really might just be the very best I have ever read. The writing was brilliant and edgy. I loved it. Only lost half a star because I have questions!!!
