Dead Souls is a socially critical black comedy. Set in Russia before the emancipation of serfs in 1861, the "dead souls" are dead serfs still being counted by landowners as property, as well as referring to the landowners' morality. Through surreal and often dark comedy, Gogol criticizes Russian society after the Napoleonic Wars. He intended to also offer solutions to the problems he satirized, but died before he ever completed the second part of what was intended to be a trilogy. The work famously ends mid-sentence.

Tchitchikov comes to town and beguiles the locals with his expertly-refined respectful and flattering inclination of the head. Gogal portrays the various caricaturish land owners with comic brilliance.

Gogol's Diary of a Madman is one of my favorite books. This one was definitely worth reading because of some wonderful turns of phrase, and memorable characters, but in the end just didn't resonate with me. The main theme of social critique feels sort of dated–not that we don't still have similar problems, but because the problems are so obvious and ubiquitous; they don't need pointing out or skewering for me at this point.
